There are two distinct syndromes which come under this heading:

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Bulimia Nervosa

One or more of the following symptoms may be present to suggest a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa:-

 

Deliberate weight loss

Body weight is maintained at least 15% below the person's normal weight

  • Self induced vomiting/purging
  • Excessive exercise
  • Use of appetite suppressants/diuretics/laxatives
  • Distorted body image

Amenorrhoea (in women)

Puberty may be delayed if onset of illness is pre-teens

Health problems caused by Anorexia Nervosa:

  • dry skin and brittle nails
  • thinning hair on the head
  • feeling cold all the time
  • absent periods
  • fine hair (lanugo) growth on the body
  • difficulty sleeping, hyperactivity or extreme fatigue
  • difficulty concentrating
  • constipation and abdominal pains
  • frequent colds and other illnesses
  • fainting spells, low blood pressure and a slow heartbeat
  • weakened muscles

Over time serious health problems in the long-term can develop such as:-

  • infertility
  • damage to the heart
  • kidney damage
  • osteoporosis

This illness presents most commonly in adolescent girls and young women.
