Family Therapy

A family is a collection of individuals connected with one another emotionally and genetically. Parents and their offspring living as a unit constitutes a nuclear family; which is by and large the norm in advanced Western economies and many rapidly developing economies and countries.

The relationship between members of the family can become disrupted and even broken down and in therapy a way is to be found in working with these individuals separately and together as a unit.

The way the system in families and individuals within it reacts to particular members of that family influences their behaviour towards one another. Often dysfunctional behaviours, which are destructive, are maintained. In family therapy, the whole family unit needs to engage as a working unit. When the needs of the ‘family’ demand it, such work can be narrowed or broadened to smaller or bigger systems for the family in question. Thus family therapy is dynamic, hopeful, helpful and open.
